The Indie Web

The Indie Web or the small web refers to a collection of web entities which exist on a more familiar and personal network, utilising the decentralised nature of the internet for personal communications, be those through blogs, feeds, link aggregations or something else. The premise of Indie Web - at least to me - is to use the inherently decentralised nature of the internet as a front for human to human interaction, away from the corporate web which often serves "business needs".

As of this moment, the Indie Web is largely a hobbyist and enthusiast space, dominated by people spending time and effort building on top of these protocols for fulfilling parts of their social wants and needs. To expand the Indie Web, is essentially to expand this hobbyist space. I will, in this post, take a slightly unconventional approach to expanding the Indie Web, and make some suggestions.

Needs and Wants

When we try to expand our product, we usually look at what we provide. What the competitors provide, and how we can outdo the competition. The outdoing here is critical. If we don't outdo the competition, the competition wins. Framing the Indie Web "Market Expansion" as this, we see the Indie Web as a social platform, akin to the likes of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (Now known as X) etc. and establish said etcs as the competition.

The goal here, is to capture some of the user audience these platforms have, and introduce and encourage them to switch to the Indie Web.

Conclusion

In writing this post, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the IndieWeb. What does it mean to be a part of the IndieWeb? and to the problem statement framing at the very start of the post. IndieWeb exists to foster human to human connection where the internet is a medium and the value it generates lies in enriching the lives of everyday people because a mother can read from her daughter on the other side of the globe. Traditional social media, has been a business founded on solving these problems, however through a case of misplaced incentives has now become a platform for moneyed interests which do disservice to the original goals of the platform.

Call me a romantic, but I still believe somewhere deep down Facebook truly started with a belief in

To make the world more open and connected

Is something a platform should strive by and to a large extent it did make it easier. My vision for the Indie Web is similar, where the world is open and connected, but not backed by a platform, but a shared common understanding in the common good of the internet and based upon common convention or protocol.
